Someone I love made what I consider to be a bad decision today. It riled me up in ways I couldn’t imagine before it happened. It woke up muscles I didn’t know I had. The angry, disappointed, OMG ones, all of those. Plus a few others.
During the Daily Check In, I vented all about my situation with The Hubs. Then I asked him to do something we don’t do very often. I asked him to pray with me.
Now first let me explain that I believe God runs everything. I believe in Divine Order and Gratitude and Love and even though I don’t formally “pray” I am one of those zany people that just “talks to God” all the time.
Whenever I do a radio show or a podcast, I pray this prayer “Dear Angels, speak through me, love through me. Use me for a higher good. Amen.” I always hope that something I say will inspire the one person in the audience who needs it most.
So I am not saying I don’t pray. I am saying, when the hoopla hits the dance floor, I recruit my hubby to pray with me.
We practice something called Affirmative Prayer. This style of praying “reflects the certainty that we are each being led to our highest good, despite any temporary appearances.” (Unity)
So even though I had at least 5 other things I intended to write about today, when I sat down to write, I knew I had to write about praying.
Because you might be like me and not do it often, but one day you might want to know how and you might feel intimidated if you don’t know Latin or haven’t memorized verses from scholarly books and repositories of wisdom.
That’s totally OK in my book, the way I see it, God invented languages so he will totally get what you are saying no matter what slang you throw in there.
By the way, I use the “he” because I find it easier in the English language than saying “The Source and Power of All That Is and Will Ever Be Created…” which couldn’t possibly be a masculine or a feminine any more than electricity or oxygen could be. So for ease of use, I put in “he” but if you want to fill in “Beautiful Universe that created me and my Hubby and chocolate, and shoe sales” feel free.
So first, if you just prefer repeating and not actually making up prayers, here is an easy prayer for strength:
I do not know what is best, but you do.
I know and affirm that the highest good for everyone is here and now made manifest.
I may not be able to see the blessing in this situation, but I ask you for the strength to accept it as it is and the wisdom to recognize the blessing when it comes.
Thank you God.
Now, if you prefer to make up your own here is my Recipe For Prayer:
Dear <Insert Holy Divine Powerful Force Here. Pick a name you love and that doesn’t annoy you. When all else fails, try Dear Fred. It might make you laugh but it will also remind you that God can answer to any name we choose.>
I know and affirm that <insert the best most wonderful outcome here, be really specific or really general, choose your own adventure. Knowing and affirming is a way of saying “I am trusting in a higher power today.” And that’s just always a good idea.>
Thank you <gratitude is a powerful force in the universe. Like gravity. The more you express gratitude, the more things (experiences and events) you have to be grateful for.
When in doubt give thanks. Literally, when you are feeling doubtful and fearful, find something to be thankful for even if it’s “I left the house with two matching socks today, Thank you God! And I have water to drink and roads that are paved and a place to go and a dream in my heart.”
Be grateful for the little things. Guess what? Most Big things are made up of tiny little things (and moments and steps) so being grateful for the baby step today, totally prepares you for the quantum leap tomorrow.>
Amen <Amen literally means, And so it is or So be it. It also means “Truly, to be firm, faithful, reliable and believe.” Yes I wikkied that. So saying Amen is putting the closing door saying. I believe this is so. I am putting positive faith and expectation into my prayer and as soon as I do that, it is done. Literally and figuratively.>
The situation that stressed me out was not resolved today. Nowhere near any kind of solution or peace. But I am totally at peace with the situation now. Because once I sat down and breathed and held my husband’s hand and prayed I could see that I do not know what is really best for anyone (including myself).
I do not see the whole picture. I can see what is mine to do: to pray, to write, to take positive action on my own behalf and then to let go. Once I knew that was what I had to do, I could accept whatever comes.
I hope this prayer for strength helps you today or someday, when you need it most. And if you have a favorite prayer, please share in the comments.
